Why Organic Whole Foods?
The Importance of Clean Food
Healthy plants begin with healthy soil. Visualize the soil as your external metabolism. The microbes in the soil work with the nutrients they have to nourish the plant and provide defense mechanisms to support the health of the plant. Organic plants have this system of support and they have all of the beneficial nutrients they need in the soil.
These factors enable the plant to grow strong and to be able to protect itself against disease and pathogenic insects. Organic plants contain higher amounts of nutrients due to the better soil quality and because the plant was not sprayed with pesticides or chemicals that prevented disease, the plant itself was able to ward off disease on its own.
Moreover, conventional plants are now being genetically engineered. The scientists are using bacteria to insert another species genes into the plant. For example, pesticidal genes are introduced into corn (Bt corn) so that the corn plants have an innate pesticide.
With the dramatic increase of food allergies coinciding with the increased production of genetically modified foods, people are beginning to realize that genetically modified food is introducing new molecules into the food that our bodies are not equipped to digest and consequently allergies develop.
The most common allergenic foods are also the largest GM crops, namely corn, soy, cotton seed (oil), and wheat. If you have food allergies, digestive dysfunction, or behavioral problems such as ADD and Autism, it is best to avoid genetically modified foods by always buying organic.
Meat is of another concern. Conventionally-raised livestock are just barely kept alive, fattened up with grains and foods the animals are not adapted to eat, injected with antibiotics and growth hormones, and then contained in very close quarters where the animals do not have the freedom to move around.
This unhealthy environment necessitates the use of antibiotics and medicines that are meant to only keep the animal alive until it is time for slaughter. To hurry the livestock to maturity and slaughter-ready age, the farmers inject growth hormones into the animals. These hormones end up in your body as well, and are often associated with hormone imbalances that disrupt your metabolism, organ functionality, and brain function.
You are what you eat! Choosing organic food for you and your family will work in your favor and promote health rather than disease. Eating organic, whole foods will nourish your body with all the support and beneficial enzymes and nutrients it needs to also ward off disease.
With this approach, it is easy to perceive of food as your best medicine. Choosing whole foods rather than anything packaged or canned is crucial to maximize the health benefits from organic foods.
Although organic foods are often the more expensive option, especially for out of season produce, there are some foods that should always be purchased organic. Avoid foods commonly genetically modified, or meats treated with antibiotics and hormones and fed these GM grains:
